Today the FIU College of Business is hosting Resumania to give business students a chance to get professional advice on their resumes and give them first hand advice on what employers are looking for in a resume from industry professionals themselves. Here we have a few details to keep in mind before attending the event and while preparing your resumes:
Dress for Success
We know that you are all probably sick of hearing this again and again, but dressing properly for an interview or meeting is an important aspect that many overlook. While your resume is showing off your education and skill, how you dress helps you sell yourself as well. How you are dressed for an interview shows who you are as an individual. Many think that dressing for an interview only consists of black and white, but the best way to dress is both professional and unique, so don’t be afraid to add a little color to your business wardrobe. While employers will be looking at your resumes, dressing for success can be the cherry on top to a successful interview or meeting.
What should you include in your Resume?
Your resume is the one place where you are expected to brag about all your achievements and skills. Employers expect to see your level of education, major, minor, and/or any certificates that you may have as well. When it comes to skills and hobbies, it is good to show that you are an overall well-rounded person, someone that employers love to meet. They don’t expect to read paragraphs of information about you, so bullet points with quick descriptions and important details are the best format to properly highlight your skills. Extracurriculars and community service are also very important to include since it helps show that you not only go to class and go home, but that you are also involved around campus and participate in activities. It is also very important to include things that you can talk about with the employer, or anyone else for that matter. They will always ask you a few questions about details that are included in your resume, or ask you to elaborate on an activities or jobs that you have worked on. This is a good way for them to get to know you more in depth, so don’t include something in your resume that you do not feel comfortable talking about.
Who are you talking to?
The following companies will be present at the event:
– Lennar Corporation
– Projectability, LLC
– Wells Fargo
– Total Quality Logistics
– Jarden Consumer Solutions
– BNY Mellon Wealth Management
If there is a specific company representative that you would like to review your resume, it would be a bonus if you could have a conversation about the company, what they do, and why you would be interested to work for them. Not just at Resumania, but at any interview it is important to know who you are talking to and where you are applying. It is good to do some background research into the company that you are applying to, and if you know who will be interviewing you, research their background as well. You may find that there i something that you can through into the conversation to peak their interest which will help in them remembering you later on.
But most importantly, our best advice is to not be stressed. Resumania is meant to help students get comfortable with the interview process and how it will be when they sit down for a job interview or internship position. At the end of your session with the company representative don’t be afraid to ask them what you may be able to improve in your resume or in an interview. Through their comments and advice you will know what you are doing right and what you can improve.
We wish you all luck and hope you all get AMAzing reviews on your resumes!
